Must have the Nikon mount. If it does, it will work. How well is another question.

Yup, a lens in Nikon AI mount will fit the D40, but not only will you lose autofocus, your meter won't work either (no program mode - you have to set the camera to M, and set shutter speed and aperture the best you can).

Many don't think it's worth the hassle, but if your photographic skills match your English, nobody's going to notice the difference.

Mind the mount! That's what matters.

When buying lens from a brand different from your camera's, make sure you are getting the lens with a mount that is the same as your camera's. If not, the lens won't fit. With a Nikon camera, all you need to see on a lens description is "Nikon mount" or "fits Nikon".

Be aware that with your camera, an old manual film lens will work only in M mode without the benefit of a lightmeter. You'll be on your own!

Like all 3rd party lenses, Vivitar lenses are made for different brand cameras (except for the marginal quality T1 mounts).

For example, if you had a Canon camera, you would buy a 3rd party lens for a Canon mount, or if you had a Nikon, you would buy that version for a Nikon, and so on.

So, the mount of the lens will dictate whether or not it will fit.

I don't know where you guys are getting your information, but Nikon DSLR light meters will work in manual mode with ANY lens. For example, on my D7100, I can even take the lens OFF, and put the camera in Manual, and the exposure meter still works.

I'll say that again… Even with THE LENS OFF, the exposure meter still works.

So check your facts please…
