What kind of lens adapter do I need for my Vivitar lens to attach to my nikon d40?
What kind of lens adapter do I need for my Vivitar lens to attach to my nikon d40?
You'd have to tell us what mount the lens uses. Vivitar is third party, and made lenses for many body brands.
As above… Without knowing which mount the Vivitar fits, there's no way to tell.
It's pretty much a waste of time and money anyway. The D40 is a crippled body (thank you Nikon for that) that was never meant to be used with anything but Nikon lenses.
You are asking if you can use a lens that is over 25 or 30 years old can be used on an amazing D40 (amazing since it is the only camera that can sync with flash as shutter speeds over 1/250th second)
Until or unless you tell us what camera system your Vivitar fits, we can't even make a guess.
I suggest you sell your Vivitar lens and save your pennies for a lens made specifically for a Nikon.
NOTE: When a Nikon D40 is compared to any of the 35 mm Nikon SLR it has features unknown prior to 1998.
NOTE2: All camera companies have proprietary lens mounts except for the 4/3rd camera which have other issues.
If you want to go cheap, then there are many different third-party lenses made which may match the quality of Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Minolta (Sony) and many, many more that are really cheap (poor quality) The choice is yours, but just do not be disappointed if you do choose to buy a low tier lens
The bottom line is that there's NO magic bullet when you start building a camera system.
If the Vivitar lens has a Nikon F mount on it, you don't need an adapter.
If it has a different mount, maybe you can change the mount.
Vivitar made lenses for different camera mounts. If you can determine the existing mount of your Vivitar lens, you would know what adapter to get.
