Is using the Nikon D3100 without its lens okay?

1. I want the Nikon D3100, but I don't have much money. I found this camera at Radio Shack for only $300 IF you purchase it without the lens. I will buy the lens another time. Will I still get amazing quality without the lens?
2. This girl uses the Nikon D3100 with lens Nikkor 50 mm / f1, 8 and gets this amazing quality as a result. This is EXACTLY what I'm looking for in using this DSLR camera:

Thanks in advance! ^^

Added (1). No photos? Really? Then, how about high quality videos?

Added (2). Why are you guys being so mean? I'm only a newbie to all this camera stuff and I was asking an honest question. People are so rude these days. Geez louise…

Added (3). Wow! I'm glad I asked before I brought the camera. I don't get it though. At Radio Shack, I practiced using the camera and it took pictures just fine.Am I wording my question wrong? Is asking about using the Nikon D3100 without Nikkor 50 mm / f1, 8 lens any better? Doesn't every camera come with lens anyhow?

You can't take photos without a lens…

Is this a joke of some kind? Of course not.

Even I know how stupid you sound, you have got to be kidding, do you really think you can do anything without the lens?

No you can't take pictures without a lens for this camera.

You can use the 50mm 1.8, it is a standard lens which is very cheap and high quality.
On your camera the 50mm would have to be af-s version (built in AF motor), otherwise you will need to focus manually.

Many DSLR cameras are bought as body only. You have to buy the lens extra. The camera must have a lens to take pictures or videos.

Many DSLR cameras come with a kit lens. You can take pics and videos with it but you would want to upgrade later to a better lens.

The D3100 is NOT sold without a lens. It is sold at Radio Shack with the 18-55mm kit lens for $649.99. You can get it for $600 at other stores.
I checked the Ken Rockwell web site. He said this camera is not sold new as a body only item.

Can you travel in a car with no engine?

No lens = no image.

It was demonstrated with a lens, but I'm assuming the dealer made clear it wasn't included.

These cameras are usually sold as a kit, with the 18-55mm zoom. The 50mm is available separately and is a useful addition.

To get started, find out the price with the 18-55, that's a good basic kit.

"I cried for the man with no shoes - until I met the camera without a lens."

You can snap the shutter button on a dslr without a lens, but all you'll get is a solid white screen - no picture. The lens is what you use to aim at the subject, zoom in to decide how much you want in the picture, stop down the aperture so the picture won't be too light or too dark, and focus with so you can decide what's important in the scene. Basically: no lens = no picture.

Now, I researched and found that Radio Shack is listing the D3100, with 18-55mm AF-S VR lens for $649. If you found one locally for $300, then it might be a demo where the lens was damaged. Just be aware that if it is a demo, you'll need to really check that it's fully functional.

A DSLR consists of two parts - a camera and a lens. It can't take any photos or videos without a lens.

Entry level Nikons, such as the D3100 should come with a kit lens - a 18~55mm. I had no idea that Nikon even sold this camera without the lens, so double-check with Radio Shack to see if it does come with one.

The higher model Nikons typically do not come with a lens as most purchasers of those cameras either have sufficient lenses, or want a different lens. Nikon entry-level cameras generally come with a starter lens because the typical buyer may not be that knowledgeable about which lens they want, or they don't already own any lenses.

If the Radio Shack D3100 indeed comes without a lens, then they are probably selling gray market - that is, cameras purchased directly from Nikon in Japan - not through the Nikon USA distributor. Some large retailers do this as they get a better deal, but the down side is it will not have a USA warranty. When buying cameras directly from Nikon - Japan, they might indeed order a different configuration (one without a lens).

If that is the case, be aware that you may not have a USA warranty, and will have to return the camera to Radio Shack rather than Nikon if you have any warranty issues.

Not saying this is the case, but selling a D3100 without a lens makes me raise the eyebrow of skepticism.

OK…

Camera body only = no lens = no pictures and no video.

It's that easy!
