I want to buy a Nikon D40x (body only)?
I'm looking for a Nikon D40x and found a well priced one with the body only i'm wondering if i can get any lens and have it fit right on. I'm going to be taking action and maybe poorly lit shots it would be great if you could suggest a lens that would fit these requirements and have a fairly good zoom.
The D40 was probably the worst entry level DSLR there ever was, limited functions and if you want auto focus then you have to buy the more expensive AF-S or AF-I Nikon lenses which will probably cost more than the D40 body. Try to get one with the kit lens, it wasn't the best kit lens ever made, but at least you'll be able to use the camera.
For low light a wide aperture lens is best, a wide aperture zoom (f4 and above) would be extremely expensive (around the £1000 mark) a 50mm f1.4 AF-S lens the cheapest 'fast' lens you can get will be less than half that (around £300).
See this list for current retail prices (UK) to give you some idea of what your buying into.

I would consider Nikon D40X 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera
10.2-megapixel CCD captures enough detail for large, photo-quality prints
2.5-inch LCD monitor; 170-degree viewing angle
3D Color Matrix Metering II for ideal exposures in almost any lighting condition
Image optimization functions and in-camera image retouching
Automatic Exposure with 8 Digital Vari-Program modes
