I have a Nikon d3100. And right now i have 18-55mm, but i want to get a better lense. One that is affordable and worth the money. And suggestions?

Added (1). I want the new lense for taking shots of friends and family and sport events.i've been told the 55mm-300mm vr was good?

That depends on what you want to do with that new lens. Nikon's 35 and 50mm f1.8 af-s lenses are popular with the D3100 owners. The 55-200 VR is also used a lot.

Better in what? Lenses are categorized by focal length. Focal length dictates the use of that lens. The 18-55mm is good for wide angle shots like landscapes to people shots to close-up portraits. The 55-300mm is good for detail work of objects not really that far from you although at 300mm, you may be able to take wildlife nearby. There's no such thing as a better lens. That's why you can interchange them.

Lense is not a word.

For sports and whatnot the 55-300mm would be a good lens to have. In low light, however, it will not fare too well

with the 18-55mm and 55-300mm lenses, you pretty much have everything covered.

@hondo, lense is an alternate spelling and is a word. It's like tyre for tire.

Yup, I agree with the 55mm-300mm vr lense. Go for it. I have one and it is really great!
