I need advice about an slr camera I'm buying?
I'm going to buy a nikon d60 camera, nikon dx 18-55 mm lense, tamron af 70-300mm lense, jessops ultra violet filter 62mm, a 4gb sd card, battery and charger. All second hand. I'm not good at looking for decent camera's so i need help. I need it for part of my college course which is photography. I'm wondering if this is a good camera to start of and how much roughly do you think it would cost me
Added (1). That's what i meant lol
A D60 is good for an entry level photographer.
The cost of all that stuff should be between $450-$500. That's just a rough estimate off the top of my head though. I'd consider a D90 if it's possible.
Just so you know an SLR is a film camera, a DSLR is the digital model you're looking at.
The camera is capable, however you do need to watch out for signs of abuse. Dents and scratches are obviouly a sign of a hard life, while things like the original eyecup, CDs, cables, straps, etc demonstrate the previous owner to have been caring to the camera. Take care to smell the camera too, it sounds funny but smell can often tell you where it has been, stale smoke suggests a smoker has used it, and there could be tar deposits on the mirror making it less effective, whilst a musty smell would indicate it has been stored poorly or exposed to water. Obviously test the camera, making sure the shutter speeds and light meter are accurate, and make sure all the lenses autofocus and stop down properly.
I think that I would start off with a Canon Rebel T3 instead. It's a great camera and it's only about $600 (with an 18-55mm kit lens included). You can get a Canon 75-300mm lens for about $150.It is pretty similar to the Tamron 70-300mm and Canon lenses have a much higher rating and are usually built better. If you order it from B&H Photo Video (link below) it will come with a battery and charger included. You can snag a UV filter at B&H for about $20 or less. So, if you go with this route, you're looking at about $800, which is actually a VERY good price for a decent camera body, 2 lenses, battery, charger and a UV filter. Also, the menu's on the T3 are simple to navigate and the screen is a nice size. It is also smaller than most DSLR's which makes it nice for traveling and easy to carry. Overall, I really recommend this camera to start off with. It will have everything you need for your class and I think you'll enjoy it a lot.
