I need advice to be a SLR camera and digital camera?
I already have a Nikon D60, but I'm looking to get a new digital camera and SLR.
My requirements for the SLR and the compacted digital camera are the same.
1) not outrageously expensive
2) zooms in far
3) takes good photos in the night
4) takes good action shots
5) take videos
6) flattering for scenery and face shots
Thanks so much! If you could send me links to sites that would also be awesome.
Your D60 is fine just buy a telephoto zoom and add a small p&s like a G12 Canon.
The Canon G11 and G12 range from $450 - $500. They both take outdoor pictures that you would expect from an expensive DSLR. Both have a built in flash that reaches almost 25 feet away. It also allows you to add a professional flash at a later date. You won't get that on a small pocket camera. It has an ASA setting of 3200 (great for low light) and when it's closed it is thicker that the pocket versions yet almost as robust as a BIG DSLR.
The camera weighs around 12 ounces and is around 2 inches thick. The G12 offers a higher resolution video as well as some more functionality. It's a simple to use camera. Based on your experience why spend a lot of money when this Canon will far exceed your needs. The G12 has an amazing video capability.
If you can afford it get a Nikon D7000. This is Nikon's newest "DX" camera. You can use the lens you have on your D60 on it but some of the functions MAY not work - not sure about that one - they probably all will!
Zooming has nothing to do with the camera - that has to do with the lens and for that there are several great lenses made by Nikon.
As far as good night shots that's another matter. How dark is it going to be? Are you going to use a flash? If you really need outrageous low-light performance buy a Nikon "FX" camera. Of course that will mean you need a new lens too so "outrageously expensive" might be a problem here.
1. Entry-level dSLRs are the cheapest if brand new. Lesser features, shorter control range, harder to access controls but basically the same as the more expensive models.
2. Zoom depends on the lens. The dSLR is just the camera body. You can buy the body and the lens separately. The longest zoom I have heard of for dSLRs is 15X. For compacts, 26X. The best quality lenses do not zoom.
3. Higher ISO, better for low light. High ISO values increase picture grain. In low light, use flash. If not, shoot in well lighted situations only.
4. Faster shutter speed, better for action. This will only apply if there's sufficient amount of light.
5. Video on a digital camera. Some have it, some don't. It's just a feature. Getting a digital video recorder is better.
6. Flattering shots depend on the photographer. The camera is just a tool.
You already have a dSLR. It would be better just to get more lenses or for video, you may want to get a digital video camera instead.
For a compact camera I recommend a Sony Cybershot. Easy to use, well built, and comes with lots of features enough to satisfy a dSLR user.
