Do some cleaning on your computer.

HD video is VERY data intensive. Your PC isn't powerful enough.

Start up Windows Task Manager and run the video player. Check the Task Manager performance window - if the graph locked up at 100% usage then that is your problem. You need to upgrade:
Be sure you have plenty of memory (4GB minimum)
A decent processor (eg Intel Core i5)
A good video card - one that is good for gaming will be good for HD video.

If you are running a PC under 1yr old with Windows 7 and still have problems then be sure to shut down all unnecesary programs. Windows 7 runs loads of stuff in the background including indexer that can sap your processor capacity.

As I've been writing here for some time the switch to HD video is no picnic. This is the major problem confronting the television makers when HD was first proposed… How to deal with all that data. The stream from HD video is very large and most older computers can't handle it.

When I switched I had the same problem you're describing. I upgraded my video card and that helped a bit but not quite.

I finally had to buy a new, much more powerful computer running at 3.3 with 8gb of RAM. I now edit HD video quickly and easily. I'm afraid that's what you'll end up doing as well.

Remember, the switch is no picnic and lots of things have to happen to make HD video run correctly.
