How to take bokeh pictures with the Nikon D3100?

I just purchased a Nikon D3100 and I'm wonder what settings I have to adjust my camera to for the bokeh effect on pictures, if it's possible.

1) Depends on the lens you have

2) Choose the lowest f-stop for your camera (like f/1.8)

3) Just plain bokeh photos lack subject and interest, so put something in front to make a subject, like this: or this:

4) To get the best bokeh, get a prime lens, like a 50mm f/1.8 lens.

Just use manual focus; like if you have a Christmas tree in front of you at about 7 feet away; zoom in all the way (if your using the kit lens) and then switch the lens to Manual Focus; and turn the manual focusing part to the right (I think) or to the left and see which gives you bokeh.
