How to set my nikon d60 to a softer photos?

So i totally envy my friend. He has a nikon dlsr cam too and the last time we went to a party he took pictures of us and the shots was so beautiful. Its not sharp. IT HAS A YELLOWISH COLOR. Something if a soft image type and its not striking (he has a speedlight and the flash is so good. I have a speedlight too) i want that kind of photos too. How did he do it? Does anyone know? My setting is in A and i'm in softer optimize image. I'm desperate.

For soft texture photos, use a Diffuser filter.

Turn sharpening way down. Set contrast lower, dial in a wrong whitebalance.

Without providing us a picture, I can tell for sure. He probably has edited the photo to make it look that way, meaning it didn't come out the way it did from the camera.
