Your video needs to be converted to work with Movie Maker.

Here's the video specs for the D3100. Your camera produces MOV files encoded with the H264/MPEG-4 AVC which is a common compressor. Unfortunately, the audio in mono PCM which isn't the greatest quality. Write down the video specs in case you ever have any other questions.

If you just want to remove the audio from the video, use Pazera Audio Extractor. It's free. It's small and doesn't install on your computer and it's very easy to use and fast. I've used it to extract audio 3 times but I mostly use it to convert audio. You open it and add your video. For "Output Directory", if you want the audio file to be saved where the video is saved, you don't have to do anything. If you want the audio saved someplace else, click on the 2nd radio (round) button and click "Browse". For "Profile" in the middle of the Main Page select WAV, in the Audio Settings in the lower left, select WAV (the other settings should be "Auto") and don't worry about the advanced settings. Click on "Convert" up in the row along the top.

I like to use WAV because it's uncompressed and won't add any distortions to the audio.

Click on the smaller, blue "Download" in the upper right - where it says "Download Zip archive".
