Pretty much the same as you would a wireless remote. Read the manual that comes with it.

You didn't specify WHICH remote (brand, model number) you are referring to. There are different ones made. Some are a simple shutter release, others have timed multi-functions, etc.

If you meant "what do I use a remote for?", then that is a different story.

EDIT: I use a wired remote trigger on my Canon, and all I have to do is plug it into the camera and it is ready to use.

Pushing the remote button halfway works the same as pushing the cameras shutter button halfway. Press it all the way and the shutter fires.

If I set the camera to "B" (or bulb), and push(and hold) the remote button, the shutter stays open until I release it.

I use the remote for long exposures ( to eliminate any camera movement, just pressing the cameras shutter button can cause slight movement), and for posing items/people ( I set the focus, go make any changes to the subject, step out of camera view and press the remote button).

I'm not sure the camera takes a wired remote (they usually attached via a 10-pin socket) - I think it uses a wireless IR remote system.
