Can you use a remote to focus while filming a video on a Nikon D3100?

I'm getting a Nikon D3100 and am shooting a documentary with it. Obviously I want to get infront of the camera, so I was wondering if I can use a compatible remote that I would buy to focus while filming a video.

Added (1). Thanks for the crash course in terms down there, but i'd just like an answer… -.

I believe the Nikon D3100 camera has "auto focus" lens capability. You should be fine. If you use a small aperture, things will be in focus for quite a few feet and the auto focus won't be so critical.

First you're going to find it extremely difficult to do any "filming" with this camera since it doesn't use film. Film and video are completely different media - perhaps a short course in digital terms would help. The real term is recording.

I'm not familiar with the D3100 but if it does autofocus while doing video then the original remote should be able to handle that too. Normally the button for autofocus is separate from the shutter release in remote controls.
