How to upload photos from my Nikon to my computer?

I got a Nikon D70 from my father, and began to take pictures fairly quickly with it. The memory card requires a separate port to plug into the computer and upload images. I can see the photos I took on my camera, and I can see them on my computer, but as soon as I click to upload them, the computer freezes in the "loading" position and does not download the images from the memory card, regardless of how many hours I leave it. Is there anything I can try to fix this?

The D70 uses Compact Flash memory cards. I had a D70 prior to my D90 - and I gave my D70 to my son.

I have had times when the card reader would not load the cards, especially if the card is a fast one. But the computer didn't freeze (although it was linux). I had to buy a new card reader to fix the problem. They are not that expensive.

Could also be a driver issue, but not as likely unless you have a real old computer. Compact Flash is a mature technology and any recent computer should have generic drivers what will work.
