How to tell if a D3100 Nikon is a fake or real?
I'm going to China in a couple of weeks and would love to get a deal on a camera. But was wondering if there was a way to tell if it is real.
Given the exchange rate I'd suspect your camera will cost the same there as it does in the states.
Just because it's China don't expect a special deal.
Fake? Well I don't know. There's all kinds of scams out there, all over the world. I've never heard of a fake Nikon camera but then the only other place I bought a camera was in Tokyo a long time ago.
If you think of the costs involved making a "real" in high volumes, you will see making a small number of fake ones should even cost more
What you need to be worried about is getting it repaired someday in the states. Nikon USA will not touch "import" cameras, so if anything happens, you will have to send it to an International Nikon repair station and deal with shipping, International insurance and any import/export duty
If it is too good to be true, it is.
If you are buying in China, be very careful of the bait and switch. Best to have a local friend go with you who can actually yell at the clerk in case they try something.
Don't take your wallet out too early. Only take your money out once you have inspected the product and it is within your grasp. As a added precaution when dealing with these people I have two rules.
I leave one hand on the product after I've inspected it.
If I'm paying by credit card, the credit card never leaves my eye sight.
Any of these rules get broken, i break my silence.
Buy your camera where you live! If you buy it in China the manual will be in Chinese, and the warranty will be of no value outside of China! If you want a deal, try amazon.com. Best Buy, or Walmart.
It's really impossible to fake a camera like that. Take a look at nikons digitutor. If the menus look the same it's real.
It will not be under warranty in the states though and it will most likely not be much cheaper.
