Is my nikon d3100 a fake?

I just bought a nikon d3100 off ebay, it was off a seller with little feedback so i was kind of worried but i was reasurred if anything goes wrong i can have a refund within 45 days from paypal.

So he listed it as 'BRAND NEW' first of all it isn't, some of the packets were open. I'm charging the battery now so i can see the shutter count. If its not 0 i'm going to ask for a partial refund. (As if itsnt new!)

But on the warranty it says 'printed in thailand' & it is also made in thailand… They probably all are from thailand but i just wanted to make sure.

Is there anyway i can check its a proper nikon?
Thanks guys!

Added (1). I paid a fair price for it yeah. Its £300 brand new on amazon, i payed about £275…
I also just checked the shutter count and it has just over 2000… Is that normal?

Check the box and all the papers, look for poor spelling and grammer. Also the build quality of the camera, if it feels cheaply made or works poorly. Check the first photos, should be clear and sharp.
thailand makes cameras for lots of brands.

There's "Brand new in original, unopened packaging" and "Brand new, I just opened it up and took a couple of test shots before deciding I didn't need it." For the first, you'd expect to pay very nearly the full price. Did you get a good deal?

<look for poor spelling and grammer.>

You mean like in EVERY Japanese instruction manual?
(Though they've got a lot better recently.)

You'll not get a 0 shutter count… My D4 had a shutter count of about 50 odd when I bought it new.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/...ikon_D3100 The D3100 is indeed made in Thailand.

As bluespeed says, don't expect a zero shutter count. Some test shots are taken before it leaves the factory. My D300 had a similar number of shots taken.

Did you feel you paid a reasonable price for it? It could still be 'brand new' in terms of condition, even if he did open a couple of packets.

It's unlikely to be a 'fake', but it could be a grey market import. You could check the serial number with Nikon. You would also be wise to check what warranty the camera has - if it's a grey market model, then likely any Nikon warranty may be invalid in your country.

Edit: A shutter count of 2000 would indicate he's had some fair use out of it. However, the camera is rated for a shutter count of 100, 000 (that doesn't mean it'll fail at 100, 001, it's like car engines it could go on for ages after, but the chances of a failure go up after that).
