Homemade DSLR carrier?

I go back and forth a lot, and need something that will fit inside my backpack or purse. How could it be kept safe? Only a Nikon D90 and one lens to travel.

Hoe about these? Http://www.etsy.com/search/handmade?ref=auto&q=camera+dslr+bags&view_type=gallery&ship_to=US

I don't always have the luxury of using a camera bag. Knapsacks, duffel bags gym bags are often my bag of choice.
Wrapping your dslr in a old, soft tshirt will keep it plenty protected. Often as good as some of the expensive camera bags.
My only caution is not to put anything too heavy ontop like 5 large dictionaries. I usually keep my camera near the top for easy access. A quick shake and the tshirt falls comfortably back into the bag.
