Indoor or out? Indoor sports are tricky because the light is usually terrible. That will require a faster lens, say a 50mm f/1.8.

Outdoor no problem, especially in bright sun. Just set your shutter speed at either 1/500 or
1/1000, your ISO at 200 and let the camera decide the aperture. With that shutter speed you should be able to freeze almost anything.

If your shooting sports I suggest you to invest on good glass. A 70-200 2.8 will be perfect for your needs If can afford the Nikon version go for it, if can't go for the sigma much cheaper and excellent for the price, fast focusing, f2.8 which means great for low light and nice bokeh effect. Also Nikon makes a cheap 35 f1.8 that will be great to get you started until you save money towards the 70-200. With your current equipment you have to bump the iso which will result to noise but you don't have other choice. So the settings probably will be different depending on the exact amount of light on the place that your shooting. I suggest you using Manual mode you have to set your lens to maximum aperture f3.5 but if you zoom in is going to become darker by 1.5 f stops(which basically means 1.5 times darker than what it is on 3.5) set your ISO around 1250 and use shutter speeds of at least 1/150 of a second or maybe 1/200 and up depending on the speed of the subject. If your picture come out dark then you need to increase the ISO even more or If your pictures are bright then decrease your iso.
