Good all around 18-55mm Nikon AF lens?

I'm an amateur photographer. I have a hobby in it, but am majoring video and film production. I have a DSLR camera - Nikon D40x, currently with a 50mm Manual Focus lens on it.

I'm looking for a good auto focus lens that gives a little zoom for "normal" situations, and because my budget is fairly low.

I was wondering if any DSLR enthusiasts could tell me if this lens would be a good purchase for an amateur photographer:

Thanks

Added (1). I would not consider myself a professional photographer. I'm just looking for a good lens that will help take a good shot. As said before, this is a hobby of mine.

Added (2). Also, I'm specifically looking for a lens that has AutoFocus (my current does not, and some pics come out blurry) and is wide angle. I've had too many issues with using a non-wide angle lens. What I have is nice, but not so great for many things I do.

The 18-55 mm VR would be a good choice.

If you are experienced using a NON-VR lens, you can save some pennies and buy the 18-55 mm standard lens you listed

The 18-55 is almost a standard in every arsenal. It is actually the default lens that come with the D40-D5000 (?)
I take most of my shots with that lens.

Yes, it is a fairly decent kit lens for a beginner.
Technically, it's not a superb lens, but it's still great in the hands of an experienced photographer.

Ya 18-55AF is really good lens.

it has following features:

• VR (Vibration Reduction) minimizes camera-movement image blur, enabling handheld shooting ~3 stops slower
• Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass element and aspherical lens element
• Built-in A/M switch enables instant exchange between AF & manual focus
• Silent Wave Motor for ultra-fast, ultra-quiet AF
• Non-rotating front element eases use of polarizing filters
• Rounded 7-blade aperture diaphragm renders pleasing out-of-focus highlights
