Fair price to sell my Nikon D40 for on ebay?

It is used and has charger and lens cap missing, aside from that its in original box and perfect condition

Can we assume you are also selling the 18-55 mm lens with it?
If so, $275 is a fair price.
You can save the hassle and cost of shipping if you sell your camera locally using craigslist

A good resource is to search on eBay for completed-sold listings. This will tell you what an item has been selling for on eBay, not the asking price.
Seems the going price for a D40 is anywhere from $100 without a lens, up to $300 with kit lens.

eBay gets about 10% these days for selling fees, so put that into perspective.
Craigslist is an option, however, eBay gets you nationwide exposure and the buyer is protected from fraud and mis-representation of the item or condition, so buyers can sometimes have a safer purchase via eBay.
