Yes, but you may want to buy the new SB-700

The SB-700 can be used with the Wireless Commander Mode on newer Nikon dSLR's as you upgrade in the next few years.

Of course. As does the 700, 800 and 900.

The commander remark from fhotoace sounds a bit silly though since the d70 has commander functionality build int.

Yes it does.

Also, the D70 has the Nikon CLS commander function in its built in flash (it can control one group of off camera Nikon speedlights I believe).

This means if you set the SB600 to 'remote' mode you can fire it wirelessly off camera, including control its power output or use TTL flash from your camera.

No need to buy the more expensive SB700, the SB600 is fine.

Of course if you're looking to just buy a flash & don't need TTL flash metering (ie you are content to adjust power output manually), then consider an even cheaper option. A YN560 flash (£60) can be used on camera or off camera with a set of radio triggers (£27). Cheaper than an SB600 at £220.
