It's a very nice entry level camera. It has been replaced by the D5100 which is DEFINITELY worth paying the little bit more for.

Actually no, I prefer my Canon cameras… A personal preference only.

I never found much advantage of the D5000 or D5100 (the D3100 replacement). Nikon's entry level camera is a D3100, and the D5100 is not really that much of a jump up the ladder from the D3100.It's a high-end entry-level camera, whatever that is.

I'd either get the D3100 or D7000. No reason to have a camera between the two.

A remarkable blend of simplicity and highly advanced D-SLR capabilities, the compact and powerful D5000 offers breathtaking 12.3-megapixel image quality, along with a flexible, Vari-angle, Live View monitor for fresh picture-taking perspectives. Nikon's EXPEED image processing further enhances performance, contributing to split-second shutter response and continuous shooting at up to 4 frames-per-second to capture fast action and precise moments perfectly.
