Dimensions of a Nikon D40 camera strapD?

I'm making a camera strap cover for a friend. I need to know the length from the end of the leather part to the other end. So basically, if you were to put a cover on it, how long does the strap cover need to be? I don't want it to cover the leather pieces. Also, what is the width? Thanks! I need this information for a Nikon D40 and not a D40x. Maybe they are the same.

On mine, it's 41 inches from mounting point to mounting point. That doesn't include the length that's folded over or extra that can be used to lengthen it. Total overall length is around 50" and the wide part is 1-1/2" wide.

The wide part of the strap (1.5 inches wide) is 22 inches long including the leather end pieces.
The thin part of the strap is just under 0.5 inches wide.
The wide part of the strap, not including the leather pieces, 18.75 inches. You'll probably need to include the leather parts so the cover won't slide back and forth, unless you put a couple stitches from your cover in to the strap.
Don't make the cover too thick. It also needs to function on both side of the strap since the strap has a tendency to twist about so the part that's supposed to go against your shoulder/neck often ends up pointing away from your shoulder/neck.
This is measured on a D40, however, all Nikon straps should be the same. For the correct way of threading the strap, see the D90 manual. The D40 manual shows a slightly different way which isn't as nice.
