Nikon SLR Cameras

Give me advice on the settings for this type of picture?

I'm gonna take my son pumkin picking today and i would love to get some good pictures out of it. I'm familiar with my camera, just don't wanna pick the wrong settings and at the end all my pictures are worthless.lol
so i have a nikon d50 w/28-80mm lense
it is a beautiful sunny day, the pictures will be taken around 4pm-6pm (incase it matters)
outdoors, i won't take my tripot, to much to carry with the pumkins.

so do i use aperture priority or shutterspeed priority? I don't trust myself enough yet to go manual.
and what ISO, shutterspeed or f/stop do i use?
anything else i forget?

Use automatic settings. All you have to remember is to hold steady and continue holding until you hear the " shutter " finish cycling. You can't really get a set answer other than this because on site conditions can vary. Clouds could come over, different angles of the sun, shadows or the like.

Use aperture priority to control your depth of field, allow the camera to choose the shutter speed. You aren't looking for super fast or long exposure here so Av is best.

You're going to be in failing light so start your ISO around 400 and then build up if need be.

Remember, wider aperture = shallower depth of field.f5.6 is a good starting point i think.open the aperture up more before you think about increasing your ISO.

If you're taking images within 2 hours of sunset remember to increase the aperture value by 1/2 stop (i.e.reduce the quantity of light coming through the lens) to saturate your colours better.
