Cheap Nikon Zoom Lens?

So many posts! Ok I have a Nikon D5000, I'm going to Italy, Croatia, Spain, etc. I need an affordable yet workable zoom lens. I have an 18-55, which is my only lens, and it does not zoom in alot. Any suggestions?
Added (1). I would prefer VR, but do I really need it?

Since you think that 55mm isn't enough and you are on a budget, I would recommend the 55-200mm VR lens. The difference between 200mm and 300mm isn't much to write home about, but if you need a bit more reach you could get the 55-300mm VR lens.
It will be a pain to carry around and switch lenses all of the time. My 70-300mm lens spends most of its time in my bag or at home.

I use the Sigma 55-200mm on my Canon (it's also available in Nikon) because I could afford it - it has its critics, but I like it. The Nikkor's probably the better lens but either would suit you.
Coming from 35mm kit to only 2 lenses was, in some ways, a real breakthrough. I change lenses on a shoot as and when I need to and one extra lens which slips into a jacket pocket is hardly a problem.
