Nikon SLR Cameras

Cameras are a hard thing to buy, right?

'Ello, I'm looking into buying a new camera. I have a Nikon D70s and I actually absolutely love it, but cameras change and I'm thinking I should too (well new camera that is). I've been looking into canons, but I love Nikons. Really I have no debate between the two, I'm open and I think they're just as good. I'm moving to Germany soon, so I want something that is light. I don't want to have to carry around a huge pro body lens like the 5D or 7D. But I want something that takes quality photos, photos that i could possibly sell down the road. I looked into the Canon Rebel EOS SL1, but i think it's more beginner. But i do enjoy the price, that's for sure. So any suggestions would be nice!

Realize there's very very little difference in the pictures between your favorite choices.

If you have any lenses you should consider Nikon. The next logical step from your D70 is the D7000, or perhaps the D7100.

I'd buy one or the other - body only, as the 18-70mm lens that came with your D70 is better optically and build-wise than the 18-105mm, and certainly better than the 18-55mm that comes with entry level Canon.

For instance, the Nikon 18-70mm lens has a metal mounting ring - not the plastic ones like that come with the 18-55mm and 18-105mm kit lenses.

If you buy the body only, and re-use your lens, you will save some money.

(I used to own the D70, then D90, and now the D7100).

As mentioned, switching camera brands is usually a horrible plan. 1) it just costs too much money replacing any of your lenses with the new brands versions and 2) your skills are what make your images amazing, NOT the camera brand you use. Thinking that your images will improve by moving to a different brand is a little naive.

If you want a full frame camera, the look at the Nikon D600. If you want a more advance cropped sensor camera to replace your D70s, then look at the new Nikon D7100.

You seem to be like a butterfly in a wind storm being blown about by reading peoples points of view on one camera brand or another.

Instead, so some independent research.

Visit DP Review and read the professional reviews of those cameras.

Next Visit DXOMark and see how the sensors of each camera performs as well as the professional reviews on specific cameras.

With dSLR's, they're still basically the same just with more megapixels and features seen on point-and-shoot cameras. Your D70 is a straightforward dSLR camera that's actually better for traditional photographers who know exactly what they are doing. If you don't print to larger than 8x10 inches, your 6MP D70 should be fine.

Don't worry about picture quality. It will be the same no matter what camera you use. Picture quality depends mostly on your skill anyway. The SL1 does seem to be light compared to your D70. I'm guessing they would be at par in much everything else. There's no such thing as a beginner's dSLR by the way.

If you really love your D70 that much, I suggest you get a more comfortable strap instead to make it seem lighter. Try a neoprene neck strap. It distributes the weight evenly and absorbs bouncing to make the camera seem lighter.

I'd look at the Nikon D3200 myself.
