Are there any camera lenses with an internal motor that are compatible with a Nikon D40x?
I have a Nikon D40x and can't for the life of me find a lens that has an internal motor, so I can use AF, that is compatible with it. Any suggestions?
With Nikon, lenses with built in focus motors are marked with the AF-S or AF-I spec. There's also AF-P but it will not work with your camera.
The only surefire spec for Sigma is HSM which indicates the presence of a hypersonic motor. Tamron has USD, PZD and BIM depending on the technology of the motor installed but other lenses without those specs can have an internal motor too making it confusing. The safest way is to read the description of the lens very well to find out if autofocuses specifically with the D40.
Any of Nikon's AF-S lenses except the E-series lenses will work with the D40. The E-series has an electronic diaphragm which only works on their newer bodies.
Nikon's AF-S lenses have internal motors.
Throughout the years, Nikon has had at least 5 different lens mounts. You need to read up on them to known which ones will work with your camera.
It's because of a lack of an internal AF motor why I do not recommend the Nikon cameras without internal focusing motors. It just makes life more complicated than it needs to be.
