Both systems are excellent and the choice of professional photographers

At this time Nikon sensors perform the best under low light conditions (indoor sports)

Here is a link where you can compare sensors of different brands and models

This link compare two of the most popular entry level (sub-$1, 000) Nikon and Canon cameras

Or you can add in the Pentax K5 and get even better results.

At entry level I suggest neither, for very good reasons. Nikon omit some basic functions from their entry level models such as bracketing, the D3100 doesn't even have a remote connection for a cable release.

Canon's build quality just can't compare with Pentax or Olympus models at entry level and is old technology they are being left further behind in sensor technology and it's noticeable.

I prefer Canon because I compared a few Nikon and Canon cameras at the local Best Buy. I liked the Canon user interface better.

With that being said, it's all personal preference. Don't buy something that I like, get something that you like. After all, it's your money and it will be your camera.
If one brand was really better than the other, the other one would be obsolete. Obviously, this isn't the case. So, go out and try out some cameras for yourself!

If you owned a Nikon SLR 30 years ago like I did, chances are you will stick with Nikon and buy a Nikon DSLR. They are made to last. Same goes for people who owned Canon cameras.

I prefer Canon, someone else prefers Nikon and Sony. Does it change anything? Nope.

Both brands are the same, it depends on which model you compare, but even then they'll be so similar.

Here's a DSLR Buying Guide - http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2009/11/which-dslr-to-buy/

I recommend Nikon D3100, D5100 and Canon EOS T2i and T3i.
