If you have to ask, then you don't need either. That also tells me that you do not currently own a DSLR system

start with an entry level camera and invest in lenses rather than getting a high end body.

But to answer your question I would prefer the 5D, because I have canon lenses already!

Between the two I would prefer the better low light ability of the Canon 5D Mk III over the potentially finer low ISO detail of the Nikon D800.

I don't have any actual plans to buy either, as besides my investment in Nikon APS-C lenses, weight matters.

You have to make up your mind for yourself. I prefer "blind" control with my eye on the viewfinder on Canon's, but the Nikon way of doing things makes more sense - hence I shoot Sony.

I prefer Nikon ergonomic but I also use some Canon equipments from time to time, so if you give me the Canon, I'll just borrow my friends equipments, if you give me the Nikon, I'll use my equipments.

It's not that hard to choose since both are good!
