Wil Minolta 200mm 2.8 g hs autofocus on Sony a99?
I understand that the a99 doesn't have a focus motor, not sure about the Minolta.
Of course the A99 has a body-motor, it wasn't made by Nikon (who removed body-motors from the D3xxx and D5xxx to cut costs).
Your 200mm f2.8 now has shake reduction and full-time manual focus over-ride to boot - things not conceived of when it was made.
It's nice to see someone else who can see beyond the Idiots' Two (I'm a Pentax man myself), but don't buy in to their propaganda. Yes, Sony's A mount and Minolta's AF mount are the same. The presence or absence of focus motors only becomes an issue with Nikon dSLRs and add to that the fact that Sony inherited everything from the dSLR production of Minolta when they bought it so I think you should be safe with that lens. I agree with Andrew. The Sony A99 has a built-in motor for autofocus. You can see the coupling to the lens in this picture:
It's at the 5 o'clock position (the only thing that is not cross head screw)
The lens has ithe counter part see pic here: (7 o'clock) position
As far as I know Minolta did not build any lenses with the AF motor in the lens, BTW.
I do not have the lens but it has a very good reputaion also amongst Sony a99 users. Autofocus is usually said to be fast with this lens.
Have fun using it!
