Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Canon etc etc all make great cameras. What is your budget and what do you plan on shooting? If you'll mainly be recording video, you should buy an actual camcorder.

I shoot and only recommend Canon because I know their attention to quality and detail.

Actually now any Canon dslr in the Rebel line does video - $500 - $1, 200. They're all excellent cameras and will last you for many years.

But, don't expect to use a dslr like a point and shoot pocket toy. Because if you do you'd might as well buy P&S. If you're actually serious about photography and really want to learn get a dslr but also take a class or two to teach you not only how to use it but all the little details of what makes a good photo.

First of all there's something about Canon you should know and that is the fact that just any Canon camera has no internal drive motor to run lenses. Every lens you get from Canon is HSM motorized. That can, but must not, make lenses AF faster, and much more expensive. On other brands that have the old style screw actuated les system, lenses are cheaper and some HSM exist for them as well and are mainly expensive high end lenses, what does not means they draw better. Some do, some don't. If you consider a low end camera, the smallest Nikon dslr's do not have internal drive as well, you need HSM lenses. But now, being an old one in this business, let me tell you that the future is on mirror-less systems and even being an old Nikon and Fuji shooter, I turned to the Sony NEX system, using the NEX-7 now. That thing is easy to handle, no weight, fully manual mode compatible with adapters and lenses of all brands and outperforms almost all high end FF cameras form all Brands, Sony's own A900, 850 and Nikon's D700-D3-D3X class as well. The shot from a Canon D5Mk3 looks just correct beside of it and it is just a stop lower in dynamic as a Nikon 36mpix D800 FF system. And, all that for just a fraction of the price. So, consider to have a look on that amazing tool.

You are the only one that can answer this because - This type of question gets asked about which Camera Manufacture or Camera Model is better or recommended far too often which I've said this many times before and I'll say this once again.

It comes down to personal preference where some may like how Nikon feels in their hands or how the layout of the Nikon Cameras are. Vice Verse on Canon Cameras.

Nikon fans would be saying to get Nikon. Same thing with Canon Fans where they would be saying to get Canon.

So otherwise it all comes down to personal preference.

If you're a beginner, you're most likely asking yourself: Nikon or Canon? Really, I feel confident in saying that you can't go wrong with either. I've used both brand's cameras extensively and find that they both offer amazing image quality with well-built, solid cameras that, if taken care of, will last decades. The best way to choose between these is go to camera shop and try out these cameras and see which suits best to you.
