Old manual focus Nikon lense: Will it work on a modern auto-focus DSLR?

Yes, but only Nikon digital SLR cameras which have a built-in motor.

It is NOT because the motor is necessary, but they are the only digital SLR cameras that can meter using the older AI or AIS manual focus lenses. Non-AI lenses can't be used however with out converting them to AI.

I have three such converted AI manual focus lenses which I have used on my old Nikon D100 and D200 cameras long ago sold. My current Nikon D300 and D800e can use them, my favorite being the 105 mm f/2.5 portrait lens.

Ken Rockwell has a list of all the Nikkor lenses and which cameras are compatible with them from as far back as 1959 AI and AIS lenses fit the D3xxx and D5xxx, but don't allow metering (or autofocus, of course) making them little better than Canon FD lenses (which won't fit EOS cameras at all).

Of course, Pentax offer limited modes (Av and M) with K-mount MF lenses, and all modes with Ka-mount ones - and even Av and M modes with M42 screw mount lenses and a suitable adapter - but nobody seems to notice the oldest SLR manufacturer in Japan these days.
