How to take pictures of sky lanterns?

We're letting some sky lanterns go on the beach at night and I want to be able to take photos. I like using my disposable camera, but I was wondering if that would work? If so would I turn on the flash? And what about if people are in it?
I also have a Nikon one digital camera. Will the photos come out well on that? With the same questions above about people and flash.

You can use flash to take people close to the camera; sky lanterns will come out without a flash, if they are up in the sky both can appear with flash
