Your sky is getting over exposed, which is why you can't see the sun.
A couple of things you could do here.
A: Get a neutral density filter. This is a filter that attaches to your camera that has a gradient on it going from grey to clear. Its a bit like having sunglasses on half your lens. They come in several different intensities. The idea is that you are darkening the sky, while keeping the lands exposure the same, so that it doesn't white out.
Hoya and Cokin would be the brand's I'd recommend for these filters. Just make sure they fit the size of your lens.

B: If you are familiar with photoshop, you can do a few things here to resolve the issue. One option would be to take a manual shot of the scene with the exposure set way lower, so that the land will appear almost black, but there will be more detail in the sky. It will be tedious but you can then cut out the sky in photoshop and overlay it on the original picture with the blown out sky, which should improve the look of the image if done well. Alternatively you can make a HDR (high dynamic range) image. I think Photoshop CS5 supports this natively but if not you can get plugins. Basically you take 3 images with 3 different exposures and combine them together and usually then everything looks right.
