How many pictures have been taken in camera how can i tell?

Was looking into getting a camera for my trip very soon, I found an ad via craigslist, the lady says her nikon D40 is brand new and she only turned it on once. I usually like to give people the benefit of the doubt but it's hard to believe someone bought a camera brand new and never used it. I want to know is there any possible way to see how many pictures/clicks have been taken with the camera? Is there anything in the camera menu or something that would let me know this? Or is it just up in the air? Camera experts need your help!

There's an on line program, you have to pay a little, that I use for my Canon. Check around to see if there's any such thing for Nikon - sorry I don't know, I'm not a Nikon user. If a program is available you should be able to get the shutter count there.

You're absolutely correct, very important to have the shutter count - like millage on a used car.

Not an expert, but I maybe able to help you. Try the web site below. I did this when I bought a refurbished Nikon D5000 a few months ago.
How much is this D40? You can get a brand new Nikon D3100 for about $450 now.
Yes, it happens more often than you'd think, people buy something expensive and then don't use it. You never know, though.

For Nikons you need a program to check the exif information, so you'll need a picture taken with the camera. Check the link.
