You most likely can't afford the best nor can you really make 'm shine. Anyway, for this camera I would advice nikon's holy trinity:
14-24
24-70
70-200

All AF-S, all f2.8

I have to agree with those above.

I use the following lenses on my D300, the "s" version uses exactly the same lenses

12-24 mm f/4 for shooting landscapes and architectural shots
24-70 mm f2.8 for shooting fashion and basketball
70-200 mm f/.2, 8 for shooting fashion, basketball and other sports
200-400 mm f/4 for shooting sports
300 mm f/2.8 for shooting football
400 mm f/2.8 for shooting football and baseball
18-200 mm VR for shooting editorial and even photography

All are AF-S lenses, so are super quick auto-focusing.

If you have the money, the 'trinity' mentioned by jeroen is good, these lenses are all designed to be used on the full frame Nikons as well as the cropped sensor (DX) bodies.

The 18-200mm is a good all purpose lens (I have this) but it is not as good quality wise as those mentioned. I also have the 50mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 which I use for portraits and a Sigma 24-70mm which I use for studio work.

I have the D300, which has the same sensor as yours.
