Vivitar 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 Macro compatibility?

I own a Nikon D3100 and was wondering whether or not this Vivitar 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 Macro lens will mount onto my camera. I know they are both F mounts but have heard that some older F mount lenses can damage the camera body. I know it will be manual focus only as well. Thanks alot!

The lens in this article is the one that I'm talking about.

I know that it's not going to be very useful as it won't give me autofocus capabilities. All i'm really worried about is whether or not it will damage my camera body.

Only AF-S lenses can be used in the full auto-focus mode

Nikkor AF lenses will meter alright with your D3100, but you will have to manually focus using them

Manual focus lenses like the Nikkor AI lenses will fit your camera but you will not be able to use the cameras meter.

Here is a link that discusses all the various Nikkor lens types and their limitations with various camera bodies

My guess is the old 28-85 mm Vivitar is not going to be useful on your new D3100 camera. To use such an older lens, you will need to buy at least a D7000 Nikon body.

None of the references to the Vivitar 28-85 mm indicate that there's a macro mode on them.

For true macro shooting, you will want to buy the Nikkor AF-S 60 mm f/2.8

Macro Focusing Zoom roll stamped and white paint filled on the front element retainer ring on my sample. Full macro mode gives about 1/2 life sized on the negative. In actual practice this lens seems to have been designed for close focus work. The extremely short focusing range in non-macro mode takes a bit of getting used to. Great little lens for close up work…
