Opteka Remote Shutter Release compatible with Nikon D3100?
I just bought a corded Opteka Shutter Release. This is it's Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/...003XN4XJU/
Though the title says it works with the Nikon D3100, I plugged it in (it was hard to do so) but it doesn't work. I attemped it on the Auto and Manual settings. It will not take shots, nor will it autofocus when half pressed. Any help would be appreciated.
Added (1). Additionally: I have turned it on and off again before testing.
The first guy who wrote a review on that product underneath the product wrote:
"- If the camera is turned on and you plug in this wired remote, the camera won't realize it's there. You have to turn the camera off and then back on for it to work (not a deal breaker but a minor annoyance)"
Did you try that?

For under $20 you could have purchase the actual Nikon ML-L3 wireless shutter release
It might work. However, looking at the reviews, out of a total of 38, 19 gave it one star.
You might be better off investing in the Nikon 25395 MC-DC2 Remote.

For no known reason, Nikon did not make the D3100 compatible with the Nikon ML-L3.
The shutter release is likely defective. But as you say you had difficulty in plugging it in, the orientation of those connectors is hard to see, so make sure you didn't simply plug the connector in upside down.
On my Nikon, the connector does take a bit of "encouragement" to be plugged in, but not enough to be difficult. Especially some 3rd party connectors.
And a note to PhotoAce - the D3100 is not compatible with the ML-L3, only a wired remote.
But I prefer a wired remote anyway. No one makes a commercial IR wireless intervalometer, and with a wired remote capability, you can't only use an external intervalometer, but also a RF remote for extended range (which also requires the wired remote functionality).
