Nikon D3100 - Should I?

I just got on a new committee at school and it requires I take pictures with a DSLR camera. I used to own a Sony a57k, but we had to return it because of a moving issue. Anyways, I was looking into the Nikon D3100. I'm on a budget and I need a camera that can take basic pictures with a little action, (nothing as fast paced as sports, but if it's available, it'd be nice)… Should I go with the Nikon D3100, or do you have other suggestions?

Also, what are some nice, affordable lenses you would recommend? I have to take pictures at events from pretty far away, so I'd like to get as far range as I could while spending as little as I can to get a quality lens. I know I'm not going to get champagne quality on a beer budget, but I want to know what's the best I can get on a "beer budget"…

Thanks.

Also, any bags, tripods, flashes you'd recommend?

I'd also suggest you consider a Canon dslr. I'm a Canon owner and love my cameras. The lenses you buy will depend on the lighting anticipated at these events… Low? High? What? You can but a good
all around lens for $400 or so but it won't be good in low light. You can buy a good low light lens but it won't zoom - considerations.

Bags and accessories are all available here. Do some shopping.

The D3100 is a fine dSLR

With it you can use any of the Nikkor AF-S lenses and since you will be shooting sorts, you may want to look at buying a second lens. There are three to choose from that will give you the reach you will need to shoot sports.

* AF-S 55-200 mm
* AF-S 55-300 mm
* AF-S 70-300 mm

Yes, the Nikon D3100 is an excellent camera. You can get it with various kit lenses and I'd suggest the 18-105mm or the 18-135mm depending on what you can afford. The 18-200mm is excellent, but can you afford it? Any of the lenses will do sports outside, but you'd have to time your shots inside to stop blur.

Bags are a luxury. You usually only need a tripod for night shots. If you're doing any inside shots, one of the 3rd part flashes will probably do. I have one and it has done everthing I want.

D3100 is fine, at it has an image sensor that performs better than all the current Canon dSLRs with an APS-C sized sensor. Kind of sad for Canon, but that's how it is for now till they get things together. Before you buy the D3100, take a close look at Sony's new A37, much better for fast moving action whether it be stills or HD video. If money is tight, don't worry about tripods, you can hand hold, the built in flash is fine for starters, and buy the cheapest bag to carry it around, something from walmart, no need to get fancy. Just get fast memory card, 8 or 16GB should be fine.

The D3100 should do if you are after the cheapest.

Don't limit yourself from far away. You're the designated shooter. You are allowed to move around. You can get near. Don't be shy.

For general shooting, the 18-55mm kit lens will perfectly do. For portraits, the kit lens will also do but if you want to blur the background much more easily, get the 50mm f/1.8. For sports, you will need at least 300mm. A popular version is the 75-300mm zoom lens.

Yes you should. I got my d3100 and the picture quality is great. The stock lense doesn't work well in low light but you are doing school stuff so it will be well lit most likely
