Nikon 35mm vs 50mm lens

I have a Nikon D7000. I'm looking to buy a Nikon 35mm f/1.8G ED lens, maybe the 1.4G, however, since my camera is not full frame, it'll end up being more of a 50mm. What lens can I buy that will properly convey the 35mm look on my camera?

A 23.3mm (35/1.5 = 23.3) lens will have the same field of view that a 35mm lens has on a full frame body. You either get a zoom lens that includes 23mm such as the Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8 (a wonderful lens!), Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8; or primes like the Nikkor 20mm f/1.8 (equivalent to a 30mm on a FX body) or the 24mm f/1.8 (equivalent to 36mm on a FX body). These are all AF-S lenses. These lenses tend to be expensive because they are fast (wide maximum aperture) and built for full frame sensors (they'll work great on your D7000). If you don't need a fast lens, then there's a bunch of zoom lenses to choose from.

You can also look in to AF lenses like the 24mm f/1.8

Be sure to check out this focal length. If you have a zoom lens that covers this focal length, tape the zoom ring to 23mm and see how you like it. You want to get a lens that covers an angle of view similar to a 35mm on full-frame?

35mm / 1.5 = 23mm

The closest would be a 24mm lens since I'm almost sure there's no 23mm. I doubt if there's an f/1.8 or f/1.4 version of it though. What focal length setting on your current zoom lens gets you the kind of angular field that you like enough to buy prime lens for? I think the 35mm 1.8 will be the closest to that. Buy the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8. It's constant at 1.8 and allows you to replicate the 35mm field of view at 24mm (or 23mm)
