Is a Nikon D40 10.2 MP camera good to buy?

I just bought a Nikon D60 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens. Was this a good but? I'm taking photography classes soon. I want good quality pictures that look professional.

The D40's getting on a bit, but it's still an excellent piece of kit, and more than adequate for a photography course.

Professional-looking photos are up to you.

Your headline says D40, your text says D60. Either will be adequate for your photography course.

Bit old, as in there are quite a few newer models with all the new bells and whistles.

But yes it is a good camera. It is a bit basic maybe but it does everything that really matters when it comes to photography.
It has the modes that you need for learning. It has the interchangable lenses, the ability to add flash and so on. So yes it is a good begin.

And in a few years when you learned how to use your camera and get the result you seek you might find yourself buying a more up to date body.

I did 4 years with my first DSLR before thinking about upgrading.

Professional quality photos have nothing to do with the camera.

D40 or D60?
I've seen magazine quality photos taken with both. It's up to you to learn how to use it.

D40 or D60, it doesn't matter as long as they work perfectly.

Picture quality won't come automatically though. That depends on skill. The camera is only a tool. Stay in class and learn. Only then will you have a chance to take full control of your camera.

D40 and D60 are pretty the same. These are good cameras but not pro. Pretty enough for photography classes.
