How many RAW FILE pictures can you take with a 16GB or 32GB card using Nikon D7000?

The problem with a large capacity memory card is all your eggs are in one basket. Memory cards are temporary storage, they bridge the gap between your camera and a hard drive. They are not designed as a permanent storage solution, hard drives are better at that and much more secure, with much larger capacities and are cheaper per Gb.

NEF files are loss-less compressed Raw, so file size alters with content, format the card in camera, something you should do to clear the card after every shoot once your images are safely on a hard drive, set Raw as your file format and the camera will tell you how many images it can record as a minimum, it will invariably be able to store more than it's telling you, usually around 5% -10% more.

899 raw files with a 32 GB card.

I thought it would be "awesome" to get 2 32 Gb cards. Its not really.

I've never transferred more than 200 photos off one card at once and I don't record videos digitally.

Keep in mind that you probably aren't going to use all the space the card can provide unless you are doing a lot of digital video recording or going insane with your shutter button.

( Of course you can't change the aperture through the soft controls while recording, yes its limited to 20~ minutes on the D7k)

Edit the problem isn't large memory cards, its people not transferring files off of them when they are done making photographs. The same problem exists with low capacity storage devices.

Additionally its not large memory cards, its only having one. The D7k has 2 card slots.

The second slot can be used for overflow or simultaneous recording for redundant backup in real time which means that it doesn't matter if you make 800 and one card dies. You have 2 copies.

I recommend 2 16 GB cards instead of 1 32GB card.

Or if you feel like a superhero get 2 class 10 32 Gb cards even though it would be hard to use all that space without recording digital videos.
