How many pics will a 16gb SD card hold?

I have a Nikon camera and it's 20.2 megapixels. How many photos will it hold?

Probably around 2,500 pics.

The number will vary depending on the exact resolution of each image,
but you might fit 1,000 to 2,000 or more on one 16 GB card.

However…

I wouldn't store more than about 300 to 400 images on one card
because it's too hard to find the one you want if there are more than that,
and if something happens to the card (lost, destroyed, etc.),
you won't lose as many images as you would if it was full.

Ultimately, this means you might want to consider using cards with lower capacity.

It depends on the resolution and quality settings you have chosen. There's a table in your camera's User Manual that shows you the number of photos for different cards sizes, resolutions, and quality settings. Most cameras also show you in the info display how many photos you have remaining at the current settings.

Can we assume that you have some kind of card already?

If so, format the card (after you have copied all your images to your computer) and then see how many images are shown in the viewfinder or top LCD. If you are using an 8 gb card, then just multiply that number by 2 to see what a 16 gb card will hold

Generally you need to know what resolution you are using. RAW of course will use up more space than L, Fine JPEG's

Depends on the Quality and Resolution settings in use, but generally many hundreds, or over a thousand unless you are recording in RAW. If you have the camera already, and a card of any size already, simply multiply your present capacity by the multiple of your present car size compared with 16Gb.
