How to zoom with a 35mm f/1.8 AF-S DX lens?

I just bought a NIKON D5100 and a 35mm f/1.8 AF-S DX lens but I'm an amateur and I don't know how to zoom. I can't find a zoom, the lens focuses but it does not zoom. Its the first time I have a proffesional camera.

This lens has no zoom.
It is called prime lens:

Its a prime lens and will not zoom you will have to do what those of us who prefer prime lenses do and that is walk on the plus side it will be better quality pictures it will allow you to use faster shutter speeds in poor light and your compositions will improve

It's not a zoom lens - it's a fixed focal length (prime) lens. You zoom with your feet! That is, you move towards or away from the subject to frame it how you want.

Primes are generally of better optical quality than most zoom lenses (a zoom lens is one which 'zooms' between 2 focal lengths, eg. 18-55mm goes from 18mm to 55mm & anything in between) and are capable of wider apertures.

Your 35mm has a maximum aperture of f1.8 which is great in low light & for shallow depth of field. You won't find a zoom lens with as wide an aperture as f1.8.

It is clear you have a fine camera and lens.

What is also clear is that you have no understanding of the fundamentals of photography

You bought a good prime lens, probably based upon hearsay, not your personal experience or knowledge.

A zoom lens will have multiple focal lengths listed on its barrel like 24-70 mm etc. A prime lens is just one focal length just like your 35 mm. As noted, the way you compose your photos using a prime lens is to use your feet to move closer of further away from your subject

You also don't know that a D5100 is NOT a professional camera. The two professional Nikon cameras are the Nikon D4 ($6, 000 with no lens) and Nikon D300s ($1, 700 with no lens) What you have is an entry level Nikon (costing less than $1, 000 with a lens) dSLR
