Does the Nikon D5100 do HDR video?
I'm getting a Nikon D5100 for Christmas and I was wondering if the in-camera HDR (high dynamic range) feature can be used while shooting video clips with this camera. I want to hear from anyone with experience with this specific camera and if they tried it. I thought it wouldn't work unless you had two DSLRs, but the new Magiclantern firmware for Canons have the HDR feature for video and thought maybe it could work similar to that.
While you can sort of create true HRD stills (see pages 76, 77 and 165. Page 216 lists under what conditions you can shoot HDR on your camera.
After you read the way HDR is produced, I think you will quickly understand why video in HDR is not possible right from the camera, but must be adding in post production (still a tricky operations since you will not have the necessary over/under exposures). What you will get would be a pseudo HDR video
Things like HDR, colour splash, fisheye photography and painting with light have become cliché and do not have the impact they once did
No dSLRs or dedicated video cameras shoot HDR video.
The HDR feature on the D5100 is not even very good for stills as it only uses 2 photos. Given the current sensor technology, good HDR requires at least 3 photos.
HDR for video is a fantasy. And hacking into a Canon camera is not going to provide true HDR results.
