I'm trying to choose between these two camera's and i'm finding it very hard to find a review that talks about what i want to know. I need a camera for taking close ups of products and i also want good auto focus in video mode so that can use it to take videos of products close up. And please don't just say which brand you prefer, i want an honest response of what you think would have the best features for my use.

Both are very capable cameras. You will not go wrong with either. Both have comparable lineup of lenses and accessories. If I were you and were considering only out of these two cameras, I would buy whichever one is cheaper. If money is not an important factor in choosing out of these two cameras, I would go with D5100.
Which DSLR camera to buy? Canon or Nikon? Or a Sony?
Which model? Which one of the following is a better camera? Canon T4i, Canon 60D, Canon T3i, Nikon D5100, Sony NEX or Pentax K-5?
Most first time DSLR buyers spend a lot of time in making sure that they make the right purchase. They keep debating for weeks if not months to find out which camera is the best. They would visit dpreview.com for detailed editorial reviews or Amazon.com for user reviews. They go on websites like snapsort.com to compare specs. Now if you are one of them and you are reading this post, I'm going to make your life easy. By the way, by looking for the best camera in your first SLR purchase, you are not doing anything wrong. I did it too when I bought my first DSLR in 2005. However having bought and used several DSLRs and Hybrid/Mirrorless Cameras over last 2-3 years, I can say that all modern day DSLRs or Mirrorless are very capable cameras. You won't go wrong buying anyone of them. If you spend too much time researching or justifying a particular model, it is likely that you will not be happy in the end. Buyer's remourse will likely haunt you. Even after your purchase, you will keep trying to justify it or feel sad that why you didn't buy the other model you were interested in. In reality, all modern SLRs have more than most of us need or will ever use. Please don't make your purchase unnecessarily complicated.

According to this tool, the Nikon D5100 is a better camera, and they give the advantages.

But in reality, either camera would serve you well. Go to a camera store and try both cameras. The one that feels right is the one for you.

Both are great.

You should know, that in DSLR's you can't have "close up" modes, you need to use manual. Everything is done through the lens, so you need a macro/micro lens, which will give you the close up you need. So the cameras can't be compared here.

The nikon d5100 provides you with video atuofocus, since the focus is done through the lens, its faster than the canon. But it makes a lot of noise, and can be heard in the video, but if you use an external mic you won't hear it.

Here is a good comparison:

Also, it depends on which one feels better in your hands, which is more comfortable and easy to use. The last thing you want is an oversized or undersized camera for your hands. This is very important.

-Hope this helps, Good Luck
