It is an entry level 35 mm SLR. It uses any of the AI Nikkor lenses

For shooting portraits, you need either an 85 mm or 105 mm lens. Since they are NOT auto-focus lenses they should be rather inexpensive.

Look on this link for a sample of a 105 mm lens.

And 85 mm lens -- the 85 mm is a faster lens so costs a bit more

Traditionally, something around focal length of 80mm are considered "portrait" lens. But, that doesn't mean that's the only way to do it. If you are doing full length portrait, 50mm may be better. Or, if you are doing head and shoulder, something like 105mm may be better. Personally, I often use 50mm and 105mm, depending on what I'm doing.

If you *just* bought the body, my suggestion would be to just get a standard 50mm f/1.8 and see how you like it.

As to the type of lens, EM uses AI or AI-S type.

Anything earlier will not mount correctly. If you force it, it will not come off.

Anything later will be pain to use or have no aperture control.
AF and AF-D will actually work but these lenses were really not made for manual focusing. It's kind of pain to have a precise control. G lens will give you no ability to use any aperture control.

The EM was designed along with specific E-series lenses, which are non-AI manual lenses. As above, you can use any non-AI Nikkor lens. It wasn't a large amount of lenses in the E-series, but they work well. I have a 50mm f/1.8 E that I use on my Nikon F body.
