Best general purpose lens for a DSLR beginner?

Buying a nikon d5200 and it comes bundled with a 18-105mm lens is this a good general purpose lens? Need Something that covers a fair amount of range with AF-S, VR, ect. But i keep hearing things that say the 18-105mm lens is just not very good hence me asking the question. I have no lenses so i'm starting brand new with about 500$ or less to spend on a lens or lenses and was hoping for something that covers a good range so i don't have to switch lenses often.

The 18-105mm kit lens is a good general purpose lens. It's not great, but it's not bad either. As you figure out what you want for additional lenses, that's the time to get better quality glass. The 18-105 focal length range is good for a wide variety of shots.

The kit lens is almost always the best choice for a beginner, because you don't know what you want or need yet, and it will still take very good images. The 18-105 isn't as good as, say, the 24-70 f/2.8, but it also doesn't cost $2, 000 either.

Once you learn the camera, and once you develop your own style of shooting, you will have a better idea of what lens or lenses you need to improve your images.
