A Nikon camera good quality?

Guest

I'm looking for a camera, preferably Nikon brand. I want it to have a clear picture that doesn't make it too white and contrast all off. I just want one that takes a good picture. I'm just confused on which Nikon to get. What should I look for in one for it to have a very good picture? Is megapixels the only thing that counts? Any ideas?

Just about any camera can do what you want if you handle it properly - just work out a budget and talk to a dealer.

And don't just fixate on Nikon - they make decent DSLRs, but Fujifilm's bridge cameras are vastly superior to the L-series, so shop around and try others.

It's stupid to concentrate on one manufacturer this early in the game.

Are you looking for a dslr camera?

If yes,

It depends on your budget.

For instance, the best Nikon camera for the lowest cost at this point (under $200) is the Nikon P310:

If you want to go mirrorless, which is the next step up, then a refurbished Nikon J1 ($240) is a good choice:

If you want to get into DSLRs, the D3200 is the lowest cost (under $600).

Or the D3200 two lens kit ($660)

And finally, if you want the best APS-C DSLR (at least as of this date), the D7100 ($1, 500).

There are more expensive Nikons but I would not recommend those as they are very costly, and you should wait until you have some experience with DSLRs before going to that level.

For the Nikon compact series, Nikon produces the "L" (entry level), "S" (slime line), "P" (top level), "A" (high end APS sensor), and AW ("All weather).

I would skip the L and S series, and predominantly go with the P series or the AW series if you want a waterproof camera. I'd also skip the A series. The Coolpix A is a great camera, but it is overpriced and intended for a small niche market.

(I own a D7100, D90, D70, P310, V1, and have owned several Nikon "S" and "P" series cameras. I even have a lowly "L" series that I converted to IR use).

Honestly

I'm surprised anybody actually recommended a camera for you, you really need directed to a good website or photography guide… No point in suggesting a camera if you don't know the 'basics'.

You might prefer a 'compact', a bridge camera might be more suitable… Or you might require the sophistication and high quality from a DSLR camera… You didn't mention how you intend to use your 'Nikon' camera… What do you intend to photograph and what level of image quality are you looking for?

If you rush in and buy your dream 'Nikon' camera you will only end up getting more confused… Try reading a good photo guide first to get a rough understanding of the basics.

Megapixels only tell picture size, not picture quality. For that you need a fair amount of photography skills. It's all in how you look at the light and how you adjust to it. Any camera will do actually if you know exactly what you're doing. Clarity, saturation and contrast depend on you. The camera is only a tool.
