Looking for a SLR camera by either Nikon or Canon with good video quality?

I'm looking into getting a SLR camera with a price range of under $1000
I want it to have a good video quality (1080p but i might go for 720p if i have to)
The camera should have both auto focus and manual focus (some don't)
I want good image quality and a fast shutter

I was looking into the D3100 from Nikon, but i heard that Canon has better video quality? Opinions that camera and recommendations for other cameras!

If you are looking for the video quality under that budget and Nikon skip the D3100 and go to the D5100. MUCH better.
My personal choice from Nikon would be the D7000. D5100 and D7000 share the same sensor, so it's not that much of a compromise. The D5100 doesn't have the auto focus motor in the body which will limit a few lenses and cost you a bit more on the lens end for the ones with a motor in them in order to use the lens in auto focus for anything. Nikon has the ability to auto focus in the newer cameras while recording.

Canon you are looking at the T3i or the T2i. Those both have the same sensor in them also, the major difference between them is that the T3i has the articulated screen and the T2i does not.So, if you don't NEED the articulating screen? It's a $100 savings. However, canon's do not auto focus while recording-Nikon does. If that is a concern for you? Go Nikon. Most serious video recorded with DSLR's the person doing the recording wants manual focus anyway, but the hobbyists or fun shooters want the auto focus option.

The next drawback you have to consider is video-you are stressing video quality. If you want to records omething longer than 12 minutes? Don't buy a DSLR. They limit out at 12 minutes. If you are primarily shooting video? Go with a video camera. There are also overheating issues with the DSLR's if they are shooting constant video.

All lenses are manual focus capable. Not all lenses will auto focus on the D5100 or the D3100. All Canon lenses will do both.

Below $1000, all DSLRs have Full HD. 720p is only what you get with the Canon T3 at ~$540, so don't worry.

Fast shutter - you don't understand shutter speed do you? Most DSLRs allow you to go up to 1/4000 and you decide which one you will shoot with. Good image quality = DSLR camera.

D3100 is excellent and Canon doesn't have vetter video quality, they just have more frame rates (like 60fps compared to 24fps in HD, which is great for slow motion). Though, more people tend to use Canon DSLRs for shows and stuff, but Nikon is also excellent here.

I purchased Canon EOS Rebel T3i camera mainly for recording video. Its quality is amazing, and the on-board mic records great to me as well. For anyone wondering about the new HD digital movie zoom, I created a video demonstrating its quality and the microphone quality as well! Its on youtube. Just search for t3i digital zoom and onboard mic test. Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments!
